December 2009
Dear Parents,

As the end of our first term approaches, we hope that you will agree that we have had an eventful and exciting end to 2009!

The Christmas Show
Our annual main event is now only a few days away and we are all getting very excited, and hope you are too!! Please don’t forget to invite all your family and friends to watch our fantastic little stars in the making shine, and make this years Christmas Show a huge success!

You are very welcome to take lots of photo’s and video’s, but can we please request that you keep flashes to a minimum and that you always make sure you are not obstructing a teacher or distracting the children!

I would also be very grateful if you could email me, or put onto disk, any photo’s of the show that you are happy for me to post onto our website and display in school on our notice board! Thank you in advance!

The best thing you can do to help prepare your child, and avoid stage fright, is to explain that you will be coming to watch the Christmas Show, and that they will be able to see you and that you want to see how amazing and clever they are!

Cookery Masterclass
We were very proud last week to welcome award winning, Michelin starred, celebrity chef, restaurateur and, most importantly, father of Arjun, Atul Kochhar, (http://www.atulkochhar.com/ ) into school to lead the children in a special cookery lesson! Some mothers joined us as the children made cheesecakes, mixing all the ingredients themselves, before we baked them in the oven, garnished them with raspberries and mint, and ate them all up! We had planned to save a few for the mums and dads at home time, but unfortunately, between the children and the teachers, they were just too delicious to leave!

Please keep a look out on the website and around school for photo’s from this special day, and I would also like to thank both Mr. And Mrs. Kochhar for coming in and giving us such a great demonstration!

If any other parents have an interesting job, skill or interest they would like to share with us in school, you are always very welcome to do so! Next term we are planning on taking the children to visit the library, and to have the police come and visit us!

ICT Lessons
We have this half term started giving lessons in ICT to the children, looking at different types of technology and how the children can use them in play and work. We have been using torches and voice recorders during play, and using the laptops to make pictures, which we will print out and display in January. The aim of our ICT programme in school is to give children an interest in technology by showing them how it can be used in ways that are useful and interesting to them.

Child Profiles
At the end of this term, and each subsequent term, you will be getting home your child’s ‘Learning Journal’. This journal is a record, or diary, of the work and achievements your child has made during the term. It lists all of the various exercises and activities that we do, whether your child has done them yet, and how they are doing. Please remember these journals cover the entire year, so the blank sections won’t be so blank next term as your child moves on to the next activities.

Behind each sheet is a notes page. This has been added to show what the Montessori exercises are aiming to teach the children from the view point of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (the national curriculum for under 5’s which we are obligated to follow).   The aim is to marry the two approaches together. You will see that some of the things we do far exceed the curriculum’s requirements, and other things do not fit exactly into the outlines, but again build on and often exceed them. Interestingly, the Early Learning Goals sections outlines the standard we are meant to achieve for sending children on to primary school. You will immediately see that we easily meet these standards and very often far surpass then! If you would like any more information, please just ask!

Please remember that the notes give guideline standards only. Many children will either exceed or fall behind these categories, but this is totally normal. If you are at all concerned, please feel free to talk to any of the teachers.

Also please we would ask you to please give us your comments about each page, and at the back on the parents comment sheet as this helps us to know whether you are pleased with what we are doing well and what we can improve, but please remember to return it to school straight after the holidays, as these are working documents, which help us to direct our studies!

Staff News
Massive congratulations to Leigh, who has this term gained her NVQ in Childcare and Development!

I hope you will also join me in saying good luck to Kashti who is taking her Montessori Diploma this year – I know from experience it is a very demanding course, but it is worth it!

That completes our newsletter! Please let me know if you have any ideas for future editions, and let me take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy your holidays and see you in January.

With very kind regards,

Charley.

PS Please don’t forget to email me any Christmas Show photo’s!

Easter 2009
Dear Parents,

It is the end of another term – it has been very eventful and has gone really fast, as it always seems to!

The Police Visit
As you know, the police came to visit us a few weeks ago to talk about safety. It would be an understatement to say that the kids LOVED it! I am sure they have already told you about how they were allowed to climb all over the police car, wear police helmets, and carry the handcuffs, plus we made a huge noise by sounding the police siren – we had the entire neighbourhood out to watch our fun!

On a more serious note, the police led us in some role-plays, outlining situations in which the police can help little children – such as when they are lost. The children got to try out being lost and hiding, and being police looking for and helping the lost children. This was all great fun, and we have been busy reinforcing the message since they have left.

The children are still talking about the visit now, as I am sure they are at home, and we hope that we will be able to invite them back to us again in the near future!

Kashti’s Absence
You may have noticed that Kashti has been absent from school for the last few weeks. This is because she is having major surgery to remove her Gallstones.   We hope that she will be back after the Easter holidays, and that you will join us in wishing her a speedy and full recovery! We miss you Kashti!!

In her absence, our Teaching Assistant, Charanjit, who is also Jasmin Dhadra’s mum, has done an absolutely fantastic job of filling in for her. She has been with us for over a year, and continually proves herself to not only be reliable, helpful, inventive and enthusiastic, but a first class teacher as well. Thank you so much for your extra help Charanjit!

Building Blocks
We have had a huge new delivery of building blocks for the children…keep a look out for them and ask your children for more info…

‘Big’ Children’s Coffee Morning and School Visits
The other major event this half term was our coffee morning. We were very pleased with everybody this year, as the standard has been exceptionally high!   All the demonstrations went well, and we hope that you have a good understanding now of how our teaching method works and why it is so successful. As always, if you have any comments or questions, please ask anyone of us, or email or call me, and we would love to help.

Our particularly high standard has been commented upon by staff who come to visit us from the major private schools in the area. Jack and Jill have already been this year, telling us that our children do exceptionally well with them! The Mall will be coming just after Easter, and they are usually also very pleased with our children, as I am sure they will be this year as well!

And Finally...
It was lovely to come into school and see everybody this week, and introduce baby Annabelle to the children (and parents!)!!

I hope that you all have a wonderful Easter holiday, and that we will see you in the new term, ready for the summer, on April 22nd!

With very kind regards,

Charley.
